People say that exercising, eating healthy, & showering are things people do all the time so they can take care of their bodies. But when it comes to our nails, we often neglect them or ignore them. This can cause potential health issues as well as lead to giving our nails a bad reputation.
You may not know it, but ignoring this type of information could potentially have negative health effects. Here are a few ways repeatedly mistreating your nails can cause problems for you when it comes to your physical well-being.
Do not bite your nails
Even though this is often heard, nearly half of all children have bitten their nails and many continue throughout adulthood.
Risking a serious injury can be harmful to your health. Couldn't you do without nail-biting? It causes a lot of harm that can negatively impact your oral and jaw health.
Boredom, stress & anxiety are all triggers for nail-biting. Some tips to stop include keeping your nails trimmed short, identifying your triggers and replacing the nail-biting habit with another good habit like using a stress ball to keep your hands busy.
Stop messing with your cuticles, hangnails and nail polish
Some people are notorious for picking at the cuticles or chewing their nails. These habits can cause broken skin and cuts and worsen your risk of infection. The best way to prevent peeling skin is to apply nail oil or hand cream, which will help reduce the urge to pick at it.
Keep your nails healthy with acetone-free nail polish remover and make sure to moisturize regularly
For somebody who spends so much time in the beauty industry, it's hard to go by without having a manicure. There are many options out there, gel and acrylic colours of both the manicure and pedicure types. They are an essential part of looking good these days. And yes, they tend to dry out nails a lot when used on most people though.
Some recent studies have shown that those with acrylic nails often experience peeling and splitting. To avoid further damage, adding a protective layer like formaldehyde- and toluene-free nail hardener can help strengthen nails in between manicures & pedicures. You should also make sure to use a nail polish remover that doesn't use acetone. Acetone creates a layer that prevents nail polish from adhering properly, leading to uneven and over-compensated nails.
Keep your fingernails dry and healthy
The use of wet hands or any utensils can lead to bacteria growth as well as other negative effects. It is better to use a hand sanitiser before and after contact with soiled surfaces that can help you avoid this phenomenon.
Water can also be very harmful to the skin if it gets on it. It can lead to chemical burns and even cracked nails if you aren't careful. It's always important to make sure that you're wearing gloves & cotton liners when cleaning dishes or doing other chemical-filled jobs in the kitchen.
Maintain good nail hygiene

- Use a brush that is soft and will work well to gently clean under the nails.
- Don't use nail tools with sharp edges as this can cause your nails to break and allow bacteria in.
- Moisturize your hands to keep them healthy and hydrated.
