6.1 magnitude earthquake hits north Japan, no tsunami warning

TOKYO - On Saturday 25th February 2023, an earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale struck off the east coast of Hokkaido in Japan. However, no tsunami warning was given after it occurred.

An earthquake struck near the Nemuro peninsula with a magnitude of 61 kilometres (38 miles), registered by the National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED).

No casualties or damage were reported immediately.





Two municipalities in Hokkaido experienced a "lower 5" earthquake as measured on Japan's 7-point intensity scale, which gauges ground motion.

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, a level 6 earthquake is typically strong enough to cause items to fall out of shelves and furniture to move without being secured.
