Man arrested for murder charges in Co Kildare

A 37-year-old man appeared in court charged with the murder of a man last month in Co Kildare.

Damien Szatkowski, of Peachville, Kilshane, Dublin 11, appeared in Naas District Court this afternoon for a special hearing.

He was arrested yesterday in connection with the death of Marcel Kusenda, who was discovered on March 8 with significant injuries outside a residence in Piercetown, Newbridge.

The man, who was in his 40s, was brought to Naas General Hospital and died two days later from his injuries.

Damien Szatkowski was charged with Mr Kusenda's murder today afternoon at Newbridge Garda Station.

The court was told that Gardaí are awaiting instructions from the Director of Public Prosecutions, with the case file still open and inquiries into the event ongoing.

Solicitor Barry Powderly asked for free legal assistance and that the jail officials supply medication to his client, who he said had a stomach condition.

Judge Desmond Zaidan allowed the application for legal aid, subject to submitting a declaration of means to the court. He also ordered that a doctor examine the accused for his ailment.

Because of the nature of the charge, no bail application could be submitted at the District Court level.

During his brief visit, Damien Szatkowski made no comments other than to clarify that there was no language barrier and that he did not require a translation.

He has been remanded to Cloverhill Prison in Dublin and will appear at Naas District Court by video link next Thursday, April 27.
