The Sligo Stages Rally's governing body has revealed that two rally competitors died in a collision at the motorsport event on Sunday afternoon.

Motorsport Ireland announced that a thorough inquiry into the event has started in a statement issued on Sunday night.

"Motorsport Ireland extends its deepest sympathies to the families and friends of two competitors who were fatally injured during a tragic accident while competing on the sixth stage of the 2023 Sligo Stages Rally," the statement read.

Motorsport Ireland also extends its sympathies to the members of the Connacht Motor Club and to all those involved in today's event who managed the issue so quickly and effectively.

Officers are looking into the circumstances surrounding the incident on Sunday at the Sligo Stages Rally, according to a Garda spokesperson.

The event has been stopped as a result of this collision, the official added.

"An Garda Siochána asks that no video of this collision be posted on social media or used in messaging services.

Anyone who has video is urged to make it available to the Garda."

Connacht Motor Club confirmed the rally's suspension in a statement.

"Connacht Motor Club can confirm that an incident took place on the Sligo Stages Rally today, July 16," it said.
