Woman dies in horse-riding incident at Glenamaddy Equestrian Centre Co Galway

A woman who died in a horse riding accident in County Galway on Thursday has been named locally as Heather Hewitt. Ms Hewitt lived in Knockanarra, Williamstown and is formerly of Crowborough, East Sussex, England.

The tragic incident happened at Glenamaddy Equestrian Centre when a horse was being mounted by a woman riding with a local equestrian club.

Emergency services were called to the scene and began their investigations. A short time later, the woman was pronounced dead. Her body was then transferred to University Hospital Galway for a postmortem examination.





The Health and Safety Authority has confirmed that there is an accident investigation following the tragedy.

Ms Hewitt was in her 40s and worked as the Glenway Riding Club treasurer.

She was survived by her husband, Kieran; daughter, Beth; parents, Clive and Tracy; sister, Andrea; stepchildren, Conor & Jack; and step-in-law Millie. She also had a large extended family & many close friends.

The riding club was shocked and saddened by learning of the premature death of their member, Ms Hewitt.

Her funeral will take place at a later date in the UK. Friends and family thank all those who helped following the incident and also for their kindness and support during this difficult time.
