Zlatan Ibrahimovic, a Swedish striker for AC Milan, announced on Sunday that he had decided to retire from football.

The 41-year-old will complete a spectacular and fruitful career when his Milan contract expires at the end of June. He had an injury-plagued season.

Ibrahimovic, who had helped Milan win the Scudetto in 2011 and the championship again the previous season, returned to the club in early 2020 for a second stint.

After being greeted by the San Siro crowd following Milan's 3-1 victory over Hellas Verona in their season finale, he remarked, "I say goodbye to football but not to you."

The striker began his professional career in 1999 with Malmo FF before moving on to Ajax Amsterdam in 2001. Since then, he has played for top European clubs including Manchester United, Inter Milan, and Milan.

Ibrahimovic, who has scored 62 goals in 121 games for Sweden, left the team following the 2016 Euros but returned in 2021 for their disastrous World Cup qualifying campaign.
